Here is my entry for round one of the 2016 Global Talent search. I love doing this competition - it has a great brief and is a sure fire way f feeling like part of a community of artists. (sitting alone in the studio can feel a little lonely sometimes).
This year was all about designing a cup, saucer and napkin for a teashop owned by a girl called Sunny. From the brief, I picked up that something quirky and English would fit the bill, so I decided to work with an Alice in Wonderland theme. I am from Oxford, England and so is Alice, so it seemed especially fitting.
I did lots of sketches and made lots of lists of the kind of stuff I wanted to draw before getting down to the business of designing. My colour scheme came from some cups and saucers that I remember from my Grandparents house when I was young. (my sister and I always used to argue over the cups - one had a rosebud inside, another a full bloom rose, and we both liked the rosebud the best!) Thy had this awesome combination of strong minty green, pink, black and white. I LOVE to draw animals and birds, so I sneaked a lot of them into my designs too (although some got ditched for the final piece) All of the separate elements were drawn and collaged on paper initially, before being brought together by the magic of photoshop.
It has been amazing to see the individual entries being shown on Facebook and Instagram this week. This is one tough competition - the standard is SO high! Good luck to everyone - can't wait to see who goes through on Friday.
